Your flight is booked. Now you have to solve the part nobody thinks about until the week before: actually getting from Northwest Indiana to the terminal.

It is a bigger problem here than most places. Depending on whether you are in Hammond, Valparaiso, or LaPorte, the trip runs anywhere from 45 minutes to well over two hours, and almost every route puts you in Chicago traffic on a deadline. The option you pick changes what the trip costs, how early you have to get up, and whether you start your vacation relaxed or already worn out.

Here is an honest look at every realistic way to get to O'Hare and Midway from Northwest Indiana, including the ones that do not involve hiring us.

One thing worth knowing before you read on: the two airports are not interchangeable for ground transportation. O'Hare sits northwest of the city, so from anywhere in Northwest Indiana you are going around or through Chicago to reach it. Midway is on the southwest side, which makes it the shorter drive from most of this area and the simpler airport to move through. Several of the options below serve one airport and not the other, so that matters as you compare.

The Seven Ways People Actually Get There

1. Drive Yourself and Park

A common choice, and the one with the most hidden cost. You control the schedule, you leave when you want, and your car is waiting when you land.

The expense is harder to pin down than people expect. On-airport economy lots are the cheapest option on airport property at both O'Hare and Midway, with the terminal garages running considerably higher. Published rates have moved more than once in the past year, so check flychicago.com for current pricing rather than relying on what you paid last time. Whatever the daily rate turns out to be, multiply it by your actual return date, then add tolls on the Indiana Toll Road, the Chicago Skyway, or I-294, plus fuel. On a week-long trip, parking and road costs together usually land in the low hundreds.

Then there is the part that does not show up on any receipt. You are driving into Chicago traffic on a deadline, looking for a space in a lot that may be full, riding the people mover with your bags, and doing the reverse at the end of a long travel day when you are exhausted.

Driving yourself works well for short trips, midday flights, and small groups. The case gets weaker as the trip gets longer.

2. Get a Ride From Family or a Friend

Free, in theory. In practice you are asking someone to give up four to five hours of their day for a round trip to O'Hare, twice, possibly starting at 4 a.m. It works well for the occasional trip and wears thin as a standing arrangement. It also puts your flight schedule inside someone else's life.

If this is your plan, have a backup you can actually reach on short notice.

3. South Shore Line Plus CTA

The train is the cheapest way into Chicago and it is genuinely good at what it does. It is just not an airport connection.

The South Shore Line runs from South Bend through Michigan City, Dune Park in Chesterton, Portage/Ogden Dunes, Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond into Millennium Station downtown. The Monon Corridor opened March 31, 2026, adding Hammond Gateway, South Hammond, Munster Ridge, and Munster/Dyer stations, which finally brings train service within reach of a large part of central Lake County. One-way fares run roughly $8 to $15 depending on which station you board at.

From Millennium Station you still have to get to the airport. That means walking to the Blue Line for O'Hare, about 45 minutes from the Loop, or the Orange Line for Midway, about 30 minutes. CTA rail fare is $2.75 with a Ventra card, though single-ride tickets bought at O'Hare carry a surcharge on the return leg.

Add it up and a Chesterton-to-O'Hare trip by train runs three hours or more door to terminal, with two transfers and your luggage along for all of it. The real limitation is scheduling. The first trains of the morning will not get you to O'Hare in time for a 6 a.m. departure, and the Orange Line does not run around the clock. South Bend riders should check times carefully, since St. Joseph County is on Eastern time and the rest of the corridor is not.

The train is a good fit when you are traveling light, flying midday, and cost is the priority. It is a poor fit for a dawn departure or a trip with checked bags and kids.

4. Uber or Lyft

Rideshare works well inside Chicago. From Northwest Indiana it behaves differently, and the reasons are structural rather than occasional.

A driver who accepts a request from Valparaiso, Kouts, or LaPorte is taking on a long trip with no fare on the return. That economics problem is why driver coverage thins out the farther east and south you go, and why early morning requests can be slower to fill. Pricing is dynamic, so you cannot know your cost until you request the ride and you have no protection against surge on a holiday weekend or a snowy morning. Vehicle size is also uncertain, which matters if four people and their checked bags are waiting at the curb.

The return trip is the harder half. Landing at O'Hare at 11 p.m. and looking for a driver willing to take a fare back into Indiana is a difficult position to be in.

Rideshare is reasonable for a short hop from Highland, Hammond, or Munster at a normal hour. It is a shaky foundation for a flight you cannot miss.

5. A Driver You Found on Facebook

Spend any time in Northwest Indiana community groups or on Marketplace and you will see posts offering airport runs at prices below what any licensed service charges. People here use this option regularly, so an honest comparison has to include it.

The arrangement is simple. You message someone, agree on a price, and they pick you up in their personal car. There is no company behind the transaction, no booking record, no dispatcher, and no second driver if the first one falls through.

For comparison purposes, three things separate it from every other option on this list. It is the cheapest ride you will find. It carries no backup, so a cancellation at 4 a.m. leaves you with a phone and no one to call. And personal auto insurance policies exclude coverage for paid passenger transport, which means the coverage you would have in any licensed vehicle is the thing you are actually trading away for the lower price.

6. Shared Airport Shuttle

A scheduled shared shuttle sits between the train and a private car. You book a seat, show up at a fixed location, and ride straight to the terminal.

How to Actually Choose

Four questions, in this order.

1. How long is the trip? Parking competes well for a short trip and can become considerably less competitive as the trip gets longer. Run the daily rate against your actual return date, not your optimistic one.
2. How many people are traveling? Per-seat options get more expensive with every person. Per-vehicle options do not. Three or more travelers changes the answer.
3. What time does your flight leave or land? A 6 a.m. departure or an 11 p.m. arrival takes the train off the table and makes rideshare a gamble. Odd hours are where prearranged service earns its cost.
4. How much luggage and how many kids? Two transfers with a stroller and checked bags is a different trip than the same route with a backpack.
